Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Calderara is the first Terre Nere's three single vineyard selections. It has the youngest vine growth of the three (averaging 40-50 years old!) and it the most afforable of the three. The extraordinary elevation causes dramatic temperature variations that benefit the body and flavor of the wine, making it look similar to fine red Burgundy or high quality Nebbiolo.

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Calderara Sottana, once the estate's entry-level wine, is now itself a selection of the best fruit and oldest vines from the heart of the Calderara vineyard, while the rest of the fruit from Calderara now goes into the Rosso. This utterly engaging wine offers up dark cherries, spices and sweet herbs in a style that brings to mind the Nebbiolos of northern Piedmont. There is a lovely density here despite the wine's medium-bodied frame. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.

Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni, April 2009.

Wine Enthusiast

Pretty, floral and sweet aromas of blue flower and forest floor are doled out in a very controlled and feminine manner. The wine is elegant and refined and shares many of the same characteristics that you would find in a top-rated Pinot Noir.

Score: 91. —Monica Larner, March 01, 2009.

Wine Spectator

Smells like tawny Port, Christmas cake and flowers. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a wonderful intensity. Has a cinnamon finish. Stylish and powerful. Needs a little bottle age to tame the tannins. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Best after 2009. 1,080 cases made.

Score: 90. —James Suckling, July 31, 2008.
